“Una Vita nella Musica – Giovani” Prize | 2024
“Everyone will naturally have made their own comparisons… I was reminded of an American quartet — the Emerson String Quartet — at the beginning of their career. That same vitality and energy came to mind when listening to the performances you gave.”
Stefano Catucci | I Concerti del Quirinale 2024
“It was particularly in Mozart that the Goldberg Quartet revealed its full potential: technical precision, interpretative maturity, and a remarkable ability to shape musical discourse with naturalness and communicative intensity.”
Alessandro Cammarano | Le Salon Musical 2025
“There is a well-known saying about works of art: that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Anyone seeking proof that a quartet is not merely the sum of four instruments, nor even of four musicians, but rather a complete organism articulated through distinct voices, surely found that proof today. And this from a quartet with only three years of activity behind it — yet already advancing at remarkable speed.”
Stefano Catucci | I Concerti del Quirinale 2024
“The magnificent score — Felix Mendelssohn’s Octet for Strings — revealing the genius of the young composer, capable of absorbing the Bachian lesson so clearly evident in the extraordinary final Presto (partially repeated as an encore), found in this ensemble an exceptional fluency of musical discourse. The individual solo passages emerged vividly within the rich timbral interplay. A true super-group performing a youthful masterpiece, rewarded with warm and seemingly endless applause from the large and enthusiastic audience in Sala Verdi. Memorable.”

The Goldberg Quartet’s autumn 2025 season marks two important milestones: the release of its debut recording, produced and supported by the label Filodinote, featuring Mozart’s String Quartet No. 15 in D minor, K.421, alongside Ravel’s String Quartet; and its debut in the main concert series of the Società del Quartetto di Milano, appearing alongside the Quartetto di Cremona in celebration of the latter’s 25th anniversary.
Founded in 2021 at the Stauffer Academy in Cremona under the guidance of the renowned Quartetto di Cremona, the Goldberg Quartet has quickly emerged as one of the most dynamic and promising young ensembles on the international chamber music scene. The quartet brings together violinist Jingzhi Zhang — winner of Second Prize and the Audience Prize at the 2023 Paganini International Violin Competition in Genoa — violinist Giacomo Lucato, violist Matilde Simionato, and cellist Martino Simionato.
From the outset of its artistic journey, the ensemble has received immediate acclaim from both critics and audiences, earning prestigious recognitions including First Prize at the Filippo Nicosia Chamber Music Award 2023, the Abbiati Prize “Piero Farulli” as Best Young Ensemble, and the special prize “Una Vita nella Musica – Giovani”, awarded by Teatro La Fenice in Venice.
Alongside its concert activity, the quartet has been selected as Artist in Residence at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Brussels, studying with Corinna Belcea and Miguel da Silva, and at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid under the guidance of Günter Pichler.
The Goldberg Quartet has appeared in many of Italy’s leading concert series and festivals, including MITO SettembreMusica, the Società del Quartetto di Milano, Trame Sonore in Mantua, Società dei Concerti di Milano, the Associazione Scarlatti in Naples, Amici della Musica in Palermo, Società del Quartetto in Vicenza, Società dei Concerti in Trieste, Filarmonica di Trento, Barco Teatro in Padua, Associazione Musicale Appassionata in Macerata, and the Società Aquilana dei Concerti “Barattelli”.
The ensemble has collaborated with distinguished musicians including clarinettist Alessandro Carbonare, Kyril Zlotnikov of the Jerusalem Quartet, Antoine Lederlin of the Belcea Quartet, members of the Quartetto di Cremona, Miguel da Silva (former violist of the Quatuor Ysaÿe), and pianist Costanza Principe. Internationally, the quartet has appeared at major festivals such as the Lofoten Festival in Norway, Vibre! Festival in Bordeaux, Crans-Montana Classics in Switzerland, Schleswig-Holstein Festival and Jeunesses Musicales Deutschland in Germany, Zeist Music Days in the Netherlands, Musique à Flaine and La Nuit du Quatuor in France, Verão Clássico in Lisbon, and the Allegra Festival in Sofia. Through collaborations with Italian Cultural Institutes, embassies, and consulates, the ensemble has also performed in Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and Finland, and has completed two tours in Japan and China.
The Goldberg Quartet is a regular guest on Rai Radio 3, where it has appeared in programs such as La Stanza della Musica, Piazza Verdi, and I Concerti del Quirinale. The ensemble is part of the MERITA platform and the Le Dimore del Quartetto network, through which it has developed projects throughout Europe, receiving the title Ensemble of the Year
in 2022.
The quartet takes its name from J. S. Bach’s celebrated Goldberg Variations, reflecting an artistic vision grounded in musical inquiry, expressive clarity, and a direct and compelling communicative energy.
